Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish writer most known for his classic works, Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. A celebrity in his lifetime, Stevenson's literary importance and influence have persisted over the years. In 2018, he was ranked as the 26th-most-translated writer in the world.
The Body Snatcher (1884) - The characters in this story were based on criminals in the employ of real-life surgeon Robert Knox (1791-1862) around the time of the notorious "Burke and Hare" murders of 1828, which were a series of 16 killings committed over a period of about 10 months in Edinburgh, Scotland. William Burke and William Hare sold the corpses to Knox for dissection at his anatomy lectures.
Olalla (1885) - A story set in Spain during the Peninsular War based on a dream that Stevenson had. It was written simultaneously with Stevenson's work to proof The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. The story falls into the Gothic and supernatural traditions of literature.
