James Lee Burke

James Lee Burke is an American author best known for his crime and mystery novels, especially the Dave Robicheaux series. His works explore themes of morality, justice and the complexities of human nature.

James Lee Burke was born in Houston, Texas, in 1936. He spent his childhood on the Gulf Coast between Texas and Louisiana. He attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute before graduating with honours from the University of Missouri. He later earned a master's degree in English from the same university.

Burke once said, "Pearl and I lived in a basement with a curtain for a door. Those were our salad days.

Burke held several jobs before becoming a full-time writer. He was a surveyor, oil company landman, long-distance truck driver and newspaper reporter. He also taught English at several universities and worked as a social worker in California with migrant workers, ex-offenders and the indigent.

His first novel, Half of Paradise (1965), was published after he met an agent introduced to him by a friend in Los Angeles. The book was critically acclaimed, with The New York Times comparing Burke's work to that of Faulkner. However, his journey as a writer was not without its challenges. His manuscript for The Lost Get-Back Boogie received over 100 rejections and remained unpublished for nine years. When Louisiana State University Press finally published it, it was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Burke achieved widespread acclaim with his Dave Robicheaux series, beginning with The Neon Rain (1987). Set in Louisiana, the series has been translated into several languages and made into films, including Heaven's Prisoners (1996) and In the Electric Mist (2009). In addition to Robicheaux, Burke has introduced readers to memorable characters such as Clete Purcel, Robicheaux's friend and partner, who is the focus of Burke's latest novel, Clete (2024).

James Lee Burke has received numerous awards, including two Edgar Awards, the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award, and the CWA Diamond Dagger. He is also a Guggenheim Fellow and a Bread Loaf Writers' Conference Fellow.

Reflecting on his success, Burke attributes much of it to perseverance and the support of his wife, Pearl. The couple have four children, including author Alafair Burke, and live on a ranch in Montana.
