David Cay Johnston

David Cay Johnston is an American investigative journalist and author specialising in tax and business issues. He is best known for his bestselling book The Making of Donald Trump (2016), which examines the president's business career and personal history.

David Cay Johnston was born in San Francisco, California. He began his journalism career at 19 at the San Jose Mercury News. Over the years, he has been a reporter for major newspapers, including the Detroit Free Press, the Los Angeles Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the New York Times. During his tenure at The New York Times (1995–2008), Johnston specialised in tax reporting, exposing corporate loopholes and inequities in the US tax system. His work won him the Pulitzer Prize for beat reporting in 2001.

Johnston took an unconventional approach to his education, studying at seven institutions, including San Francisco State University and the University of Chicago. Although he never earned a formal degree, he focused on advanced and graduate studies in journalism, law and economics. "I skipped the basics to pursue what fascinated me," Johnston later explained his academic path.

In addition to reporting, Johnston has taught journalism and law at several institutions. He was on the faculty of Syracuse University College of Law for 15 years and has also taught at the University of Southern California, UCLA Extension and Rochester Institute of Technology, where he is currently a professor of practice.

Johnston co-founded DCReport.org, an ad-free, non-profit news service focused on US governance. "We want to give power back to the people," he said of the project. He has also served as president of Investigative Reporters & Editors and board chairman of Investigative Post, a nonprofit newsroom in Buffalo.

Johnston is the author of eight books, four of them bestsellers. His 1992 debut, Temples of Chance, examined corruption in the casino industry. Perfectly Legal (2003) and Free Lunch (2007) analysed how tax policies and corporate practices disadvantage ordinary Americans.

Divided (2014) examined income inequality, and his 2016 book The Making of Donald Trump offered a critical look at Trump's rise. In 2018, Johnston published It's Even Worse Than You Think, detailing the impact of the Trump administration's policies.
