Charles Atkins

Charles Atkins is a board-certified psychiatrist, author, and clinical trainer. He writes fiction and non-fiction, including the Barrett Conyors forensic thriller series. Atkins also uses the pseudonym, Caleb James.

Charles Atkins debuted his novel Portrait in 1998. His also known for Barrett Conyors (2008–2009) and Lillian and Ada Mystery (2012–2014) series. His mysteries and thrillers explore complex psychological issues and the darker side of human nature.

Lillian and Ada Mystery is set in Connecticut and features two female bloodhounds who develop a romantic relationship.

Charles Atkins, MD, is also a practicing psychiatrist and member of the Yale Clinical Faculty. His non-fiction books on Opioid Use Disorders (2018), Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Disorders (2014), Bipolar Disorder, and Alzheimer's (2007) are practical resources for families and mental-health consumers.

His latest is the second edition of Co-Occurring Disorders is a must-have resource for the rubber-meets-the-road clinician, as well as the educators who train them.

In addition to his books, Atkins has contributed hundreds of articles, columns, and short stories to professional and popular magazines, newspapers, and journals. He has been a regular contributor to the American Medical Association's American Medical News and featured in the New York Times, among other publications.

Charles Atkins has served as a consultant to the Reader's Digest Medical Breakthrough series and is on the volunteer clinical faculty at Yale University School of Medicine.

Charles Atkins lives in Connecticut, where he split his time between clinical work, writing, and family.
