Matt Stroud

Matt Stroud is an expert in data-driven innovation with a background in astrophysics and extensive experience in telecommunications, financial services and AI. He studied mathematics, physics, and chemistry at SEEVIC in Benfleet and holds a PhD in Astrophysics from University College London.

After completing his PhD, Stroud joined UK mobile operator EE, taking on key roles including Head of Network Strategy and later Head of Corporate Strategy. His growing interest in data and its potential led him to the UK's Digital Catapult, where he was Head of Personal Data and Trust. In this role, Stroud focused on innovation with personal data and artificial intelligence, working with businesses and start-ups.

He was also involved in the steering committee that helped establish Open Banking in the UK, emphasising secure and consent-based data sharing.

Stroud's career continued with a role as European Managing Director at Flybits, a Canadian AI company specialising in contextualisation solutions for large banks. He has held senior positions in consultancies, developing strategic product roadmaps for global financial institutions.

Stroud's expertise extends to the media industry, having worked with a global media company and leading UK publishers. He is also a member of the HAT Foundation's Data Governance & Ethics Board and was in DataIQ's list of the 100 most influential people in the UK data industry.

In 2024, Stroud published Digital Liberty, a book that examines the convergence of data, artificial intelligence and the social fabric of society. The book highlights the potential crisis facing liberal democracies and discusses two possible futures: one marked by inequality and unrest and another by decentralised technological adaptation. Drawing on liberal philosophy and contemporary digital insights, Digital Liberty offers a critical perspective on the relationship between technology and society and argues for a future consistent with democratic values.

Currently, Stroud is involved in building Neom, a futuristic mega-city project in Saudi Arabia. His work focuses on the commercial implications of decentralised digital identity and consent-based data sharing, exploring how these elements can empower or constrain business models.
