Mary Katherine “Merricat” Blackwood and her elder sister Constance live alone in their ancestral home with their crippled uncle after the tragic murder of both of their parents, their aunt, and their younger brother. Having been accused and later acquitted of the murders, Constance confines herself to the grounds of their home, while Merricat contends with their hostile neighbors and with the ever-increasing sense of impending danger she feels is heading their way.
In We Have Always Lived in the Castle, author Shirley Jackson deftly handles delicate subjects like mental illness, agoraphobia, and social isolation. We Have Always Lived in the Castle was Jackson’s final novel, and has been held in high critical esteem since its publication in 1962.

    🙈Ikke min kop te

I enjoyed the story at first, and the way it was written made it easy to read. The simple language makes the story- which written in first person- easier to follow, since it provided only one perspective to keep track of. However, i do feel that towards the end, the story just got too lengthy and there were some parts of it that really didnt make sense to me to that they had to be included, because i couldnt figure out if they was supposed to mean anything at all. It lost me around the 7th or 8th chapter because i got tired with the lengthy parts, so skipped a lot of them and still really didnt miss anything.

There was not much spook in it, apart from the uitr alarming, disturbing monologues of the protagonist.

only wished they would come true. “It’s wrong to hate them,” Constance said, “it only weakens you,” but I hated them anyway, and wondered why it had been worth while creating them in the first place.

Merricat, said Connie, would you like a cup of tea?
Oh no, said Merricat, you’ll poison me.
Merricat, said Connie, would you like to go to sleep?
