The latest magnificent creation from the award-winning author of Cryptonomicon and the Baroque Cycle trilogy.
Erasmas, 'Raz', is a young avout living in the Concent, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers. Three times during history's darkest epochs, violence has invaded and devastated the cloistered community. Yet the avout have always managed to adapt in the wake of catastrophe.
But they now prepare to open the Concent's gates to the outside world, in celebration of a once-a-decade rite. Suddenly, Erasmas finds himself a major player in a drama that will determine the future of his world — as he sets out on an extraordinary odyssey that will carry him to the most dangerous, inhospitable corners of the planet…and beyond.

A very challenging book to read, but one that I enjoyed as I committed myself to reading to from start to finish. Yet again, Stephenson's wild mind created another concept story that blew my mind. An intellectual read for sure. It took me some time to get used to the language the author created for the story. Kept having to refer to the glossary - like Composto's The End of the Kai. But after 100 pages or so I got used to it. Any fan of hard core sci fi will enjoy it.

Orolo said nothing, which made me embarrassed at the time. When I thought about it later, though, I understood that he didn’t need to say anything because what I’d said was obviously true.

“I happen to disagree,” Orolo said. “But things have changed between us. We are no longer Pa and Fid but Fraa and Fraa, and fraas disagree, cordially, all the time.”

“Thank you but it has certainly felt like a Pa/Fid conversation to this point.”

He meant rather that the evolution of our minds from bits of inanimate matter was more beautiful and more extraordinary than any of the miracles cataloged down through the ages by the religions of our world.
