Alt writes this book as perhaps a therapeutic exercise: he wants to externalize his feelings in order to cope with them and maybe get to understand himself better in the process. He also writes as a means to finally let go of his love for Gnuj, a young woman twenty years younger, a married woman, a lonely woman. Gnuj & Alt is a story about love, but only indirectly. It is really a story about people and our weaknesses. It's about taking a glimpse into the history of these very human characters and getting to understand what things influenced them into becoming who they are, into acting they way they act or even loving the way they love. It is a story about the incidence of upbringing and the impact of the people who surround us, who teach us, who inspire or discourage us. This is the story of a doomed relationship between a 40-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman who, during a single summer, found love, acceptance and happiness.
