Throughout his political career he concentrated on demolishing the legacy of apartheid. He worked hard to eradicate institutionalized racism, inequality, and poverty. He endeavored hard to bring about racial reconciliation.

He was a staunch African nationalist and democratic socialist. Between 1991 and 1997, he was the President of the African National Congress. Between 1998 and 1999, this great leader was the Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement. He was the first elected black President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
