This book tells the story of the James family. Frank and Jesse's father, The Rev. Robert James, is a native of Kentucky. His parents are well-respected people and belong to the middle class of society. Their wish is to raise up their children “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Robert James is a noble, studious young man who is given to reflection on subjects of a religious character.
