Doppler

An elk is for life, not just for Christmas…

Doppler has just lost his father. Despite the fact that he has a pregnant wife and two children, he decides to move into the woods. Here he starts a lonely and purposefully boring existence. He has never been so happy.

When Doppler kills a she-elk for meat he can't feel guilty about it, but he does feel a bit guilty about the calf she left behind. When the baby elk adopts him, Doppler is tempted to knock it down as well. But the little elk is wily and escapes death, and gradually they become friends. He names the little elk Bongo.

Doppler is a charming, absurd and subversive novel with serious undertones and criticism of our modern consumer society.

Possibly one of my favorite stories. Beside being decent criticism for our modern world, book has this special type of absurd comedy that I really enjoy.

    😄Vildt sjov

Очень смешная и глубокая история. В её сюжете так много абсурдного, что ей бы начинаться с "жили были" или "в тридевятом царстве". Но это не сказка, так как абсурдность происходящего уж очень напоминает реальность.

One problem with people is that as soon as they fill a space it’s them you see and not the space. Large, desolate landscapes stop being large, desolate landscapes once they have people in them. They define what the eye sees. And the human eye is almost always directed at other humans. In this way an illusion is created that humans are more important than those things on earth which are not human. It’s a sick illusion. Perhaps elk are the most important creatures when it comes down to it, I say to Bongo.

Boredom is underrated. I tell Gregus that my plan is to bore myself to happiness.

so we go back to the tent and continue to do nothing until we get bored. It’s embedded in our DNA that we constantly have to be doing things. Finding things to do. As long as you’re active that’s fine, in a way, however mindless the activity.
