In Midnight in Washington (2021), Adam Schiff reflects on the actions of Donald Trump that compromised the very nature of democracy in America. Narrating key moments of his life up to the point he became a congressman, Schiff gives the readers insights on his ideologies and upbringing. He argues that Trump committed unlawful acts against the nation, chronicles the first and second impeachment, and details Trump’s reaction to Joe Biden winning the 2020 presidential election.

Midnight in Washington is a testimony of what happened on the human level during key political events. Schiff aims to show how the Republican Party was stripped of its principles, how he lost friendships with colleagues he had worked with for years, and how certain people risked everything to stand up against the autocratic rule of Donald Trump.
