Enter the quiet yet deeply complex inner world of a young woman searching for independence in early 20th-century England. In Backwater, Dorothy Miller Richardson continues the journey of Miriam Henderson, capturing her experiences as she navigates work, identity, and the subtle pressures of society.

This audiobook brings to life one of the earliest examples of stream-of-consciousness storytelling, immersing listeners in Miriam’s thoughts, emotions, and shifting perceptions. Rather than focusing on dramatic events, Richardson reveals the beauty and tension of everyday life—where personal growth unfolds through reflection, observation, and quiet rebellion against societal expectations.

As Miriam takes on a teaching role in London, she confronts the constraints placed on women while striving to define her own path. Her story resonates with anyone who has ever questioned their place in the world or sought meaning beyond convention.

Thoughtful, intimate, and ahead of its time, Backwater offers a unique listening experience for lovers of classic literature and introspective storytelling. This audiobook invites you to slow down, listen closely, and explore the richness of the human mind.
