“Just get over it.”

Said by your boss a month after your brother died.

By a friend, two days after you got attacked and left for dead.

By the voice in your own head every single day for thirty-four years.

Psychotherapist and author Jack Williamson heard those words more times than he can count, from other people and from himself. It nearly destroyed him. Then it made him write this book.

Just Get Over It is not a textbook on bereavement. It is not a self-help book with four easy steps to healing, because frankly, if someone is offering you that, you should head in the opposite direction. What it is, is an honest, unflinching, and occasionally darkly funny conversation about loss in all its forms.

Because grief doesn’t just arrive when someone dies. It arrives when the relationship breaks, when the career ends, when the family that was supposed to love you disowns you, when your body betrays you, when a pandemic steals two years of your life and the world tells you to “get back to normal.” These are all griefs. And until we name them as such, we can’t begin to navigate them.

Inside, you’ll discover the twelve types of grief that most people; including many mental health professionals, have never heard of. You’ll have the ten most damaging myths about grief and loss dismantled one by one. You’ll map the forces that shaped how you grieve long before loss ever arrived. And you’ll be introduced to The Cyclical Nature of Loss — a new model that finally reflects what grief actually looks like: not a neat line from denial to acceptance, but a cycle of states we move through again and again, each time carrying something we didn’t have before.

From bereavement to broken relationships, career loss to chronic illness, faith crises to family estrangement, Just Get Over It covers the losses no one sends cards for — and the ones everyone thinks they understand but don’t.

You will not just get over it. You will get through it. There’s a world of difference.
