Enjoy and Fully Understand 25 haiku by 芥川龍之介（あくたがわりゅうのすけ）Akutagawa Ryūnosuke (1892–1927)

Everyone knows Akutagawa Ryūnosuke the short story writer — 「羅生門」(Rashōmon), 「藪の中」(In a Grove), 「鼻」(The Nose) — the man whose name adorns Japan's most prestigious literary prize. What most people don't know is that Akutagawa was also a devoted haiku poet who composed hundreds of poems across his short life.

His haiku aren't what you'd expect from a master of dark, psychologically complex fiction. There's a green frog that looks freshly painted, a chicken too hot to move, and a snotty nose that refuses to fade into the twilight. But look closer and you'll find his novelist's instinct at work beneath every surface — beauty produced by illness, the ocean still alive inside a dried sardine, Buddha statues dissolving into shimmering nothing. They are sharp, layered, and full of surprises.

This book is designed to help beginner to intermediate students of Japanese learn vocabulary and grammar while uncovering the layers of meaning that translations alone can't capture.

The collection features twenty-five haiku, each presented with the original Japanese and furigana, multiple English translations (ranging from literal to figurative), and detailed vocabulary breakdowns with definitions and grammar notes. Every haiku also includes an explanation written in both Japanese and English, seasonal word (季語) identification, and a deeper analysis exploring the cultural, historical, and poetic context behind the poem. QR codes throughout the book let you instantly hear recordings of each haiku and commentary by scanning with your phone.

About the Poet:

芥川龍之介 (1892–1927) is one of Japan's most celebrated modern authors, but his haiku reveal a side of him his fiction rarely shows — playful, tender, unguarded. A protégé of 夏目漱石 (Natsume Sōseki) and a lifelong student of classical Japanese poetry, Akutagawa brought a storyteller's eye to the haiku form: a bamboo fruit hanging beyond a fence becomes a meditation on rarity, a winter wind over Tokyo becomes an existential question, and his own red nose at dusk becomes a final, self-mocking farewell. He composed under the pen name 我鬼 (Gaki) — “Self-Demon” — and the name fits. These twenty-five poems offer a direct glimpse of the restless mind behind the literature, seventeen syllables at a time.
