I swallow. ‘How about a safe place to live where we don’t have to scrounge for food or fight for it?’

‘It’s yours.’

But that’s like a child expecting a hungry lion to be her fuzzy pet instead of being her killer.

That’s okay. I don’t need him to be my friend, so long as he’s killing off my enemies.

My sensei always told me to trust my instincts, that my gut knows things my brain doesn’t and can figure things out faster.
