Oftentimes, I’ll “air write” my word to get a feel for where my ascenders and descenders will land before writing it with ink. This usually helps me get the fitting right the first (or second!) time. When making custom pieces, I’ll often use multiple pieces of practice paper trying to get the layout just right. So feel free to mess with it until it looks the way you want!
