As a result, whilst social media has been shown to be effective at reducing stigma (Primack et al., 2018a), improving social connectedness and aiding one’s ability to cope with daily stress and well-being (Dodson et al., 2020; Wolfers & Schneider, 2020), increasing a person’s social support and self-esteem (for a review, see Best et al., 2014), it does have associated risks and it is these risks that simply cannot be ignored no matter what anyone else says.
