The Looking-Glass Sisters

A tragic love story about two sisters who cannot live with or without each other.
Far out on the plains of northern Norway stands a house. It belongs to two middle-aged sisters. They seldom venture out and nobody visits. The older needs nursing and the younger keeps house. Then, one day, a man arrives…
Why Peirene chose to publish this book: ‘This is a tragedy about a woman who yearns for love but ends up in a painfully destructive conflict with her sister. It is also a story about loneliness – both geographical and psychological. Facing the prospect of a life without love, we fall back into isolating delusions at exactly the moment when we need to connect.’Meike Ziervogel
‘It’s a liberating feeling when you get a completely original story in your hands.’Dagbladet
‘Raw and dark and wonderfully different from anything else.’Dag og Tid
‘Innovative and sensuous.’Bergens Tidende

Admittedly, this is a place where I’m invisible and away from the world, but I’m also part of everything

noring me for several days, everything would be as it was before: some daily confrontations, rounds of arguing and shouting at each other, the occasional fit of rage. For I want nothing more than to return to my old room and my daily rhythm, to diverting my thoughts with my dear books, to the serenity of the body when it wakes up at night or in the morning in the same old bed, with the toilet in the corridor just outside. But I have to realize that

The days passed as in a fog. Or was it a matter of hours? She doesn’t know, she’s never been given a proper answer; they always avoided the issue, went vague and speechless later when she asked them: How long? How long did I lie in bed at home before going to the hospital? She’s pretty sure it was at least twenty-four hours, for she has a vague memory of her sister sitting by the bed staring at her with gleaming eyes, while the autumn sky outside changed from light to dark.
